OUR STORY
Pemberton Distillery is a Certified Organic artisan distillery located in the beautiful Pemberton Valley of British Columbia.
Our philosophy is to produce fine, distinctly regional spirits that highlight the unique natural character of the raw ingredients.
The Idea Begins
The story of Schramm Vodka began in the summer of 2002, when Tyler Schramm and his brother, Jonathan, were discussing possibilities for Jonathan and his wife's small potato farm in the fertile Pemberton Valley. Pemberton, a small farming community nestling beneath the snow-capped coastal mountains north of the Whistler Resort, is famous for its potatoes. In fact, its potatoes are of such quality, that Pemberton - referred to as "Spud Valley" by locals - is a world supplier of seed potatoes, as well as high grade table potatoes. The brothers realized that Pemberton potatoes, and the pristine glacial waters from the mountain creeks, would provide the perfect ingredients for a premium quality vodka.
Mastering the Art & Science of Distilling
Following his dream to produce a local and organic spirit, Tyler completed his Masters thesis in potato vodka distilling, at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, a world leader in Brewing and Distilling Sciences. Here he created the original recipe for Schramm Vodka. He then returned to the Pemberton Valley and the Pemberton Distillery was born.
Building the Distillery By Hand
The three Schramm brothers, Tyler, Jonathan and Jake constructed the Distillery buildings by hand over the winter of 2008. The buildings included the installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system which will reduce the distillery's energy use by 40%.
Trial Distillations & First-Bottling
Early in 2009, Tyler conducted a series of trial distillations to perfect his recipe and in July he carefully hand-distilled the first crop of locally-grown organic potatoes and the Schramm family hand-bottled the first run of Schramm Vodka, taking pride in its clarity, smooth mouth-feel and rich character.
PEMBERTON VALLEY ORGANIC SINGLE MALT WHISKY
Summer 2010: Pemberton Distillery is producing a run of small batch organic Single Malt Whisky using organic malted barley from the Okanagan Valley and pure Coast Mountain water. The whisky will age in oak casks for a minimum of three years. We are excited to produce one of the few true single malt whiskies made in Canada.
What is single malt whisky? Whisky that is completely produced and distilled by a single distillery using a pot still and malted barley as the only grain ingredient.
